Colleges gear up for career, majors event

October 3, 2002

MSU is expecting more than 2,000 prospective students to swarm campus Saturday for a hands-on open house experience.

Ten MSU colleges will participate in Science, Engineering, and Technology Day with hopes of convincing high school students into coming to campus next fall.

MSU colleges and programs will show their facilities, demonstrations and offer opportunities to talk to faculty and staff members and students.

“It involves not just one or two people passing out brochures,” said Jennifer Hodges, academic adviser for the College of Engineering. “It’s a way to show specific things happening in the colleges.”

Hodges said the event is also a great opportunity for no-preference students to check out the different colleges they are interested in.

“It’s a way to explore different majors and career opportunities for students that aren’t quite sure what they want,” Hodges said.

But the purpose of the event is to educate students.

“The intent is to help students learn about the college and academic programs and help students find out if MSU is a good fit for them,” said Stephanie Ritrievi, academic adviser for the College of Natural Science.

She said the College of Natural Science will give tours of the Biomedical and Physical Science Building and the Squid facility, which is a research tool that has the capability of making fast, precise measurements of magnetic properties.

“For many colleges it is the single collegewide recruiting event,” she said.

Jason Smith, a no-preference freshman, said the event is a good opportunity for students like himself to choose a major.

“I think this will really give students a chance to help them check the colleges they are interested in and figure things out.”
