The second installment of the East Lansing Film Societys fall series features the Canadian film Atanarjuat (The Fast Runner) at 7 p.m. Friday through Sunday at the Hannah Community Center, 819 Abbott Road.
An epic journey awaits Atanarjuat as he faces evil spirits and miscreant shamans as he waits for forces of light to help him. He must overcome jealousy and murder to restore harmony in his community.
The story is so fantastical, it is hard to explain without seeing it.
The homegrown film China, directed by MSU English Assistant Professor Jeffrey Wray, also premieres in East Lansing before its scheduled 2003 PBS release.
China is a film about Evelyn and Rudolph Jackson (Sheila Stewart and Von Washington) who fall in an unhealthy routine with little excitement. They have their lives changed by Rudolphs spiritual attachment to martial arts.
So what else is on?
This weekend, the fall crop of promising movies opens in theaters. The Rules of Attraction and The Transporter fall in line behind Knockaround Guys in this falls testosterone parade. It will ease the pain of the holiday movies on their way.
