Womens tennis has trouble at invitational

The MSU women’s tennis team struggled at the three-day Bronco Invitational in Kalamazoo this weekend. The Spartans battled Ball State, Drake, Indiana, Marquette and host Western Michigan in the “hidden dual” format tournament, meaning MSU played each school in singles or doubles, but no team or individual winners were named.

On Friday, freshman Shelley Brady defeated Marquette’s Michelle Mojzis 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (12) at No. 2 singles. Brady played with sophomore Kate Thomas in No. 1 doubles later in the day and defeated Drake’s Annali de Bruyn and Rebekah Thomas, 8-6. MSU lost its other seven matches Friday.

On Saturday, sophomore Jehan Patel (No. 4 singles) and sophomore Karen Gustafson (No. 5 singles) notched victories against Drake.

Patel conquered Thomas 6-4, 6-3, while Gustafson defeated Marie Mainil 6-3, 6-3. Aside from those two victories, MSU lost its other 10 matches

On Sunday, Gustafson won a No. 6 singles match against Western’s Maelynn Bernosky, 6-7, 6-4, 1-0. MSU lost the other five singles matches to Western.

“We were without a lot of players, so our team wasn’t fully represented,” head coach Tim Bauer said in a released statement.
