Spartans take two at home, still perfect

September 9, 2002
Junior forward Tiffany Laskowski challenges Oaklanda goalkeeper Sarah Buckland Sunday at Old College FIeld.

The women’s soccer team continued its perfect season by picking up two wins over the weekend.

In addition to dominating the first three teams they’ve played in the 2002 season, MSU (3-0) has managed to preserve the team’s goal by successfully defending its home turf, Old College Field.

The Spartans defeated Eastern Michigan (1-2) in the weekend opener Friday, holding the Eagles scoreless in a 3-0 victory.

Junior midfielder Michelle Perun got the offense going for MSU when she floated a header from freshman forward Emma Harris past Eastern’s goalie with 2:54 gone from the clock.

The Spartans scored the next of their three first-half goals 12 minutes later, when Perun again invaded the net to put MSU up by two.

Amy Allen, a senior Spartan defender, notched the last goal of the game at the 30:32 mark. Allen sent the shot screaming into the Eagle’s net off of an assist from freshman midfielder Erin Konheim.

MSU emerged a 3-0 victor when neither team put up any points in the second half.

Junior Stacy Heller and sophomore Erin Carlson shared time in net for the Spartans, earning a save apiece and combining for a complete-game shutout.

The Spartan squad then blanked the Oakland Grizzlies (2-2) 2-0 Sunday to cap off the weekend. Despite the weather, which approached the 90-degree mark by the noon kickoff, MSU came into the match charged and prepared to face off against a difficult Grizzlie team.

“I’m very proud of the way we played,” head coach Tom Saxton said. “(Oakland) is a tough opponent.

“It wasn’t the prettiest game, but we got the job done.”

Junior forward Tiffany Laskowski’s goal was the only offense in the first half. It was Laskowski’s second of the season.

Both teams played a physical second half and MSU was rewarded when Andrea Sied scored with more than four minutes left in regulation. The junior defender’s shot was on a penalty kick, and streaked past Grizzlie goalkeeper Sarah Buckland to put the Spartans up by two.

MSU will ride a three-game winning streak Friday into Lexington, Ky., a streak Saxton hopes will give his team the lift it needs to compete against the Wildcats, who are ranked 18th in the nation. The Spartans also will be in action on Sunday in Dayton, Ohio, for a match with the Dayton Flyers.

“We have a huge weekend coming up - we play a nationally-ranked Kentucky team and a regional power in Dayton,” Saxton said. “It’s great that we’re going into those games unbeaten and unscored upon.”
