Fraternity has uphill road to reopen house, students should support goals for change

Pi Kappa Phi has something to prove as it mounts efforts to rebuild its MSU chapter after evicting its members for violating anti-hazing and anti-discrimination policies.

Fraternity leaders were met with skepticism Wednesday as it pitched its plan to reopen the MSU chapter to the Residence Halls Association.

National Pi Kappa Phi leaders evicted their MSU members in May after some went into Mason and Abbot halls cafeterias wearing pink sleeveless T-shirts with phrases such as “Capt. Gay Sex,” “I like little boys” and “Fag Hairstylist” written on the back in April.

The national organization made the right choice.

And now it’s up to the national council to continue on the right path to ensure its house isn’t refilled with people of the same discriminatory mind-sets.

On Wednesday, Pi Kappa Phi national coordinator Kenny Oubre told RHA “what happened last year doesn’t represent who we are.”

This summer the national fraternity added sexual orientation to its anti-discrimination clause, and a sexual orientation seminar is planned for Pi Kappa Phi in January.

As a community, we need to forgive this fraternity for the actions of few of its members. If students continue to redirect attention back to April the community as a whole will not and cannot move forward. We need to work together to promote unity.

We have to make a conscious effort to recognize the positive actions the Pi Kappa Phi national council is taking, and commend it for correcting its problems.

We need to give these people a second chance and a pat on the back if they prove their intentions are for the betterment of the community.

Pi Kappa Phi has come a long way fast in righting the wrong that was committed by its members. Students should support the fraternity’s effort to reconcile and rebuild in a positive way.
