No. 6 field hockey has successful weekend

The MSU field hockey team (8-1) claimed two victories over East Coast opponents in the weekend, including an upset of No. 4 James Madison.

The No. 6 Spartans topped the Dukes 1-0 on Sunday, thanks to an early goal by sophomore midfielder Annebet Beerman. Just 2:19 into play, Beerman smacked in a penalty corner for the game-winner.

Assisted by senior midfielder Julia Adams and senior back Jenny Sanders, this was Beerman’s 11th goal of the season. Adams is now tied for third-place on MSU’s all-time career assist list. Sanders’ assist is her ninth of the season. She is now fourth on the all-time assists list.

MSU redshirt freshman goalkeeper Christina Kirklady kept the Dukes off the board with five stops, including four in the second half.

The Spartans started the weekend with a 5-1 win over Massachusetts on Saturday.

Junior midfielder Sophie Rosmalen began the scoring in the 22nd minute, but UMass tied it eight minutes later.

Beerman then put the Spartans back on top and, in the second half, sophomore forward Michelle Carstens scored at the 52:12 mark, and senior midfielder Cynthia Martin secured the victory with her second goal of the game at the 68:54 mark.

Kirklady made seven saves Saturday.
