Men start off season with third place finish

September 18, 2002

After coming off of top-five finishes and a berth in the NCAA East Regional last season, this year’s men’s golf team has big shoes to fill - and it’s already turning heads.

The No. 20-ranked golfers finished third out of 15 teams Tuesday in the Inverness Intercollegiate Invitational hosted by Toledo, Ohio.

“I felt like if we finished in the top five for the first tournament this year, that would be a good start for us,” head coach Mark Hankins said. “This was one of the best tournaments in the country, on a national golf course against great teams from all over the country.”

On day one of the tourney, MSU carded a two-round score of 590 (291-299) to finish in first with a one-stroke lead over Florida and Fresno State.

Several Spartans finished in the top 25 after round one, including senior All-American Eric Jorgensen and junior Casey Lubahn, who tied for fifth place with 146, shooting (73-73) and (71-75), respectively.

Senior John Koskinen shot a 150 to tie for 19th and sophomore Andy Ruthkoski recorded a 151 to place 25th.

Tuesday, MSU posted a 299, good enough for 889 overall and a bronze finish in the team’s first tournament of the season.

“I think our whole team got off to a slower start today,” Hankins said. “We were always battling and ended up shooting a 299 - not horrible, but definitely not what we could have shot.”

Jorgensen finished in a tie for eighth, with 220 overall score, and Lubahn placed 12th, carding a 221.

The Spartans will travel next to Bloomington, Ind., for the Northern Intercollegiate, held Sept. 28 and 29.

The women’s team finished in 16th place at the NCAA Fall Preview Tuesday.

The tournament, hosted by Purdue, was held at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex in West Lafayette, Ind. MSU completed the tourney with a 25-over-par 936 (306-317-313) overall score.

Freshman Dayna Burleigh headed the Spartan pack, carding 225 (73-78-74) on the weekend, securing her in a three-way tie for 18th.
