Minority groups welcome students back to campus with receptions

August 26, 2002

With food and friendly faces, minority groups across campus are welcoming new students with receptions this week.

The events will begin Monday with the Asian American and Pacific Islander Welcome Reception.

Free food will begin the reception, along with a welcome from university administration, said Marc Johnston, co-president of the Asian Pacific American Student Organization.

“It’s a building of community and making sure people have contacts,” Johnston said. The evening will culminate with entertainment, including break dancing, he added.

The Alliance of Lesbian-Bisexual-Gay-Transgendered and Straight Ally Students will hold its first meeting today in the Union.

External Vice-Chairperson Tamar Jourian said the meeting is to bring the campus caucuses and LBGT leaders together.

“We’re just going to try to plan events for the semester,” she said.

The black student welcome reception will take place Tuesday.

Black Student Alliance President Darren Lamb said various student groups across campus will be represented at the reception.

“It’s an opportunity for black students to get together,” he said. “To get them acquainted with the campus and black student life.”

The Native American Welcome Reception Wednesday is at Lafayette Square in Brody Hall, and will include traditional native foods like fry bread, smoked whitefish and buffalo meatballs.

Thursday will conclude the week’s welcomes, with the Chicano/Latino Welcome Reception.
