Junior Sarah Martin was the runner-up in the 86th Michigan Women’s Amateur Golf Championship on Friday.

Martin was defeated by Clarkston’s Mary Jane Anderson Hiestand 1-up in the title match at The Moor Course at Boyne Highlands in Harbor Springs.

After 14 holes Anderson Hiestand led, but Martin birdied the next three holes to tie the match with 17 holes completed.

Anderson Hiestand pared the 18th and final hole, with Martin still to put for par. Martin failed to duplicate Anderson Hiestand’s efforts and was forced to settle for second place.

A Martin victory would have given the MSU golf teams two amateur champions within the span of a week. Senior Eric Jorgensen won the 102nd North and South Men’s Amateur tournament on July 5 at the Pinehurst Resort in Pinehurst, N.C.
