Jorgensen takes 1st at Pinehurst

MSU senior golfer Eric Jorgensen walked away from the 102nd annual North and South Men’s Amateur golf tournament Friday with the tournament title.

The tournament took place at Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina, the site of the 1999 U.S. Open.

The 14th-seeded Jorgensen beat 17th-seeded Nathan Smith of Brookville, Pa., in match play with a 4-and-3 victory.

Jorgensen’s play equaled the hot weather Thursday, beating Richard Swift of Sydney, Australia, in a 2-and-1 quarterfinals match. He then outscored Cortland Lowe of Augusta, Ga., with a 1-up Thursday afternoon.

Jorgensen is a third-team All-American and MSU’s first men’s golf Big Ten medalist. He tied for sixth place in the Michigan Open in late June, making him one of two MSU golfers to finish in the top ten.

He now joins Jack Nicklaus, Davis Love III and Curtis Strange as tourney champs of the longest running amateur event in the nation.

Jorgensen is now automatically qualified for next year’s event.
