Building benches

More green space always a plus, changes in parking can never have best of both worlds

Plans already are in place for a $10,000 renovation of the Ann Street Plaza, at the corner of M.A.C. and Albert avenues. East Lansing officials want to transform the “parking-dominated” space to a “people-dominated” one.

But if that truly is the goal, more intense alterations are necessary.

The plan would eliminate four of 11 spaces in the plaza, adjusting the remaining spaces, adding 17 plant containers and four benches. The width of the driving area also will be lessened from 14 to 10 feet.

The plans are quite reasonable, and added green space and dining will likely provide a better atmosphere at the plaza.

But the removal of only four spaces limits the amount of change possible. If plans are to make the area pedestrian-oriented, then the vehicles will have to go.

Some businesses at the plaza are apprehensive about the change, worried the loss of spaces will be a financial blow. But parking in that area is hardly a problem - there are a number of city lots and structures within a short walk. If beautification is really the goal, eliminating parking from the area would seem to be the only answer.

When placed in tight quarters, moving cars and people on foot always will have conflicts. Complete harmony is impossible, and attempts to make such a system work is destined to fail.

Foot traffic already is high in the area, and alterations that still include vehicles will present a new set of problems.

Instead of parking illegally along the drive to run in for a brief period, it may become commonplace to see cars double parked in the plaza. Rather than a car parked illegally, it will also block others.

Ultimately, the forefront of the issue is need - few residents complain about a lack of places to sit, but parking in the city always is an issue.

Regardless of how the plaza changes or of how many people enjoy relaxing on a bench thanks to the renovations, many area residents only will recognize one issue - the loss of several parking spots.
