U finishes on skid

The softball team finished its season with a 1-0 loss to Michigan at Old College Field May 5.

Senior right-hander Becky Gray (13-18) finished just two strikeouts shy of MSU’s all-time strikeout record. Gray started the final three games of the season for the Spartans (24-35 overall, 4-15 Big Ten) in an attempt to claim the record.

Gray tallied seven strikeouts against Western Michigan on May 2, no strikeouts against the Wolverines on May 4 and two against the Wolverines on May 5. She finished with 407 career strikeouts, second all-time.

Despite the disappointing end to the season, four Spartans claimed All-Big Ten honors for the 2002 season.

Sophomore first baseman Natalie Furrow, sophomore third baseman Brittney Green and junior right fielder Tiffany Wallace earned second team honors, while junior center fielder Sandy Lewis earned third team honors.
