MBA students win top title in competition

April 16, 2002

A team of students from the Eli Broad Graduate School of Management took home the title from the 2002 Big Ten Case Competition.

The annual competition, held earlier this month at The Ohio State University, pits teams of students against each other in analyzing, researching and solving real-world business problems. The solution must be reached within 24 hours. The teams are judged by industry and academic officials.

The team was made up of business administration graduate students Donald Bryant, Wayne Carlson, Zachary Dalton and David DerKevorkian.

“It’s fairly prestigious in the fact that it helps our MBA program in terms of ranking and helps get our name out there as a top program,” DerKevorkian said. “It was a lot of work but it was really exciting to win. It’s good for the school and it’s one of those times that I felt really proud to be a Spartan.”

DerKevorkian said the competition was a great experience and he enjoyed being able to apply his knowledge to a real-world situation.

“It gave us the chance to apply a lot of the things we’ve learned in our classroom,” he said. “It lets us be a little more creative.”

But this year’s group wasn’t the first winning team from MSU.

In 1999, the team brought a first-place trophy back to MSU, which sits in the Eppley Center. In the National Black MBA Association Case Competition, an MSU team earned second place.
