Chemistry professor named Guggenheim fellow

Chemistry Professor Mercouri Kanatzidis, has been awarded a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation fellowship for his scholarly achievement in the area of solid-state chemistry.

Guggenheim fellowships are given annually to provide individuals with times to creatively work in their field of study. The foundation will distribute $6.75 million to 184 artists, scholars and scientists for 2002-03.

Kanatzidis said the award will be used for his sabbatical at universities in France and Germany while he pursues scientific interests.

In 2001, MSU computer science and engineering Professor Anil Jain was named a Guggenheim fellow.
