Cancer Relay for Life begins on campus

April 18, 2002

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Munn Ice Arena and will continue until 10 a.m. Sunday.

Teams of 15 to 20 members must keep at least one member walking or skating for 24 hours. Admission is free and skates can be rented for $3.

Last year, 27 teams raised $29,000. This year, 36 teams representing residence halls, fraternities, sororities, service groups and academic organizations will participate.

Cancer survivors will take part in a victory lap at 7 p.m. Saturday, followed by a luminary ceremony at 9 p.m. to remember people who have died from cancer. Luminary bags will be sold for $10.

Money raised will go to the American Cancer Society for cancer research, education, advocacy and patient service.

“This is an important event because almost everyone has been touched by cancer,” said Stephanie Rigler, American Red Cross community development director. “It’s a way to fight back against the disease.”
