Red Cross drives draw blood throughout campus

The American Red Cross is sponsoring blood drives in April at various campus locations.

Blood drives will be held at:

• 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today in the Main Library

• 1-7 p.m. Tuesday in Snyder Hall

• Noon-6 p.m. Tuesday in Campbell Hall

• Noon-6 p.m. Thursday in Bailey Hall

• 1-7 p.m. April 17 in Wilson Hall

Paul Rinella, complex director in Case Hall, said MSU has been supportive in the past with donating blood. The hall held a blood drive Thursday.

“We raise a lot of blood on campus throughout the year,” he said. “Our community helps the greater community. For some people, there is a fear factor involved. But people have been giving selflessly, thinking beyond their own world and reaching out to help others. They believe they are making a difference. There are still people in need of blood, like cancer patients and accident victims. But they are helping out the community.”

Trindadian artist to speak on culture

The Department of Political Science and James Madison College are co-sponsoring a lecture by Valerie Belgrave, an artist, author and playwright, at 8 p.m. Wednesday in 339 Case Hall.

The lecture is called “An Artist’s View of Painting, Writing and Thinking in Caribbean Cultures.” Belgrave also will exhibit paintings and show a video of her art.

The event is free to the public.

Carol Allen, a research specialist for political science, said she thinks students will enjoy Belgrave’s presentation.

“She really does interesting and exciting art,” she said. “I think what she will be able to offer is a very indigenous and immediate sense of what the Trinidadian culture is like, with particular emphasis on art and novel writing. She is also a playwright, so she can give her sense of drama as well.”

Traffic committee to discuss parking changes

The All-University Traffic Committee will host a meeting today.

The committee is working on its final draft of three recommendations regarding parking on campus, said Dawn Mazur, executive secretary for the committee.

The meeting will be held from noon-1:30 p.m. at the MSU Department of Police and Public Safety Community Room.

The three main recommendations detail visitor and retiree parking and fees, perimeter parking and transportation and reserved or leased spaced parking.

Mazur said it is important for students to come to the meeting.

“Everyone will be affected by it,” she said. “Some of the changes will be fees and some will be where people park.”

If the recommendations are approved by university officials, many could go into effect in July.

For more information on the recommendations, see www.autc.msu.edu.
