Artist, filmmaker to speak in Brody today

Sistahs is presenting its 2002 Conference, “Nappy: Black Women and the Politics of Hair,” at 5:30 p.m. today in Lafayette Square in Brody Hall.

The keynote speaker for the event will be Lydia Douglas, an artist and filmmaker. There will be other speakers discussing topics such as skin color, race and privilege and black women’s issues.

There will also be vendors selling African art and poetry by MSU’s Black Poets Society.

The cost for the presentation is $5 for all students and $10 for nonstudents.

Higher education administration graduate student Angela Johnson, who also is the educational program coordinator for the Women’s Resource Center, said she expects the conference to be enjoyable.

“It should be enlightening,” she said. “It should be full of energy and empowerment and self-acknowledgement. The people that are speaking are wonderful in the work they have done. It’s truly a family affair and it’s open to the community. It will be a good time. A family reunion and embracing of self.”
