Green and gold shamrocks are covering the walls of local businesses, schools and restaurants for the 19th annual Shamrocks Against Dystrophy program.

For a $1 donation, students and customers can sign green paper shamrocks, and for a donation of $5 or more they sign gold shamrocks. The shamrocks are hung on the walls or windows of the place the donation was made.

Kelly McClellan, spokeswoman for the Muscular Dystrophy Association in Holt, said all the money raised will be used to help people in Michigan who have neuromuscular disorders.

Muscular dystrophy is an umbrella term for a group of more than 40 hereditary muscle destroying disorders.

The diseases can affect people of any age and include skeletal deformities and muscle weakness, wasting, pain and swelling.

“It raises awareness and helps find a cure,” McClellan said.

The association provides services including diagnostic and follow-up care at clinics, summer camps and funding for university research.

The program ends Sunday.
