Science fiction project open to undergrad researchers, lit-lovers

March 15, 2002

Lovers of science fiction can be part of a campus research group that provides opportunities for leadership, research and college credit.

The Science Fiction Genre Evolution Project will begin fall semester. An informative meeting for interested undergraduates will be held from 4-5:30 p.m. Sunday in the Eustace-Cole Hall lounge. Dinner will be provided.

The innovative research project began at the University of Michigan in 1998 and is the study of how the genre of science fiction has evolved over time. Members of the research team will use American short stories from science fiction magazines.

“We’re looking at things like what happened when female authors entered the field and what sort of themes are the most popular,” said English senior Anne Edison-Swift, who is the project’s student leader and a State News employee. “One of the great things is there are so many opportunities to take on leadership. It’s about a 10 hour-per-week time commitment and anybody can do it. We’re looking for a diverse group of majors.”

Students interested in attending the meeting should contact Edison-Swift at edisonsw@msu.edu.
