RHA looking for new leadership as elections continue

March 13, 2002

Elections for the Residence Halls Association’s executive board will continue tonight at the general assembly meeting.

President-elect Tim Liss could be joined by Case Hall Rep. Adam Raezler and John Sturk, representative for the North American Indian Student Organization, as they run for the internal vice president position. Danielle DeCormier, the association’s secretary, is on the ballot after losing the presidential election last month.

Current Internal Vice President Josh Minor said a big part of the job is to act as an adviser and oversee financial processes, legislation and meeting procedures.

“Its job is to keep communication open between the general assembly and the executives and accommodate all parties,” he said. “On the other side of its job is to take care of processes that occur internally within RHA.”

Minor said it is difficult to say what improvements can be made to the RHA position.

“Every (internal vice president) will run the job differently because it’s a lot of who you are and what your personality is,” he said. “RHA is an ever-changing organization and there are always going to be improvements people will have to make. They are always going to struggle with getting people to show up and keeping people well informed.

“Hopefully they can find a good system that works for them.”

Diversity within the association always is a big issue, he said. Remaining good stewards of tax money will be another.

“I know this year’s executives have been very conscientious and have made all the efforts possible to be good stewards of money and to responsible in spending,” he said. “That’s always a challenge and takes a pro-active awareness in order to do that.”

Raezler accepted the nomination in February, one week after he told The State News the position would weaken his voice for his constituents.

“The power in this position lies with you being the advocate,” he said. “Once the general assembly makes their decision and they decide how to handle something and pursue it, you are the one who has to advocate them.”

This will be DeCormier’s second chance for the position since she moved off campus, disqualifying her from eligibility.

“I had more fun as a representative, but I think I am doing more for the organization being on executive board,” she said. “I like working within the organization better than I do with thousands of students. It’s easier for me to sit there and be quiet without having to worry about saying anything and help people develop what they think and where they want the organization to go.”

She said she will teach the representatives and new executive board members the history of the association for better understanding of how it serves students on campus.

Looking back on the past year, Minor said his experience taught him how to remain objective and listen to all viewpoints and to be a tolerant and accepting person.

“It was a worthwhile experience and demanding position that really tests you as an individual,” he said.

Elections for the association’s external vice president will be held at the March 20 general assembly meeting.
