Parking prices upped for athletic events

March 1, 2002

Attending athletic events at MSU will be a little more expensive beginning this summer.

Beginning July 1, parking rates will increase for all MSU athletics, university officials announced Thursday.

The increase was put into effect to help defray the cost of increased security and parking lot repairs.

Officials estimate MSU hosts about 650 special events every year. MSU police Chief Bruce Benson said this is the first time in seven years football parking prices have gone up, and the first time in 10 years that basketball parking prices have increased.

“They’re not exorbitant increases,” he said.

Parking for basketball games and other events at Breslin Center that previously cost $5 will cost $7.

The Breslin shuttle bus will increase costs from $2 to $3.

Most public parking for football games will increase from $5 to $10.

But football parking lots closer to the stadium - at Munn Field, the Communication Arts and Sciences Building ramp, the tennis courts on Wilson Road, the Main Library, and Breslin Center - will increase from $10 to $15.

The shuttle for people with disabilities will increase from $8 to $10, and recreational vehicles and charter buses will increase from $10 to $30.

Additionally, the football shuttle bus from Lot 89, the commuter lot, will go up from $2 to $3.
