No Trik can save this record

Occasionally a record’s uniqueness blazes through the music industry like a locomotive. Unfortunately, Trik Turner lost its ticket.

This band can rock, that’s without question. It combines occasional rap dosed with heavy guitar noise a la Zebrahead or Limp Bizkit. But like the 200 copycat Creed bands, Trik Turner mimics its predecessors in an obvious fashion.

“Existence” merges the worst parts of Sugar Ray to vocals reminiscent of Layne Staley from Alice in Chains, while the guitars balance on the same plane as Tool’s “Prison Sex.”

“Sacrifice” is unfortunate and frustrating for too many reasons - the lyrics, the vocals, the rip-offs. This band has potential, but songs like this one jolt it to a halt.

“Temptation” mixes things up with wa-wa petal and record scratches, and “Not Like You” bonds a worthwhile guitar line unfortunately with vocals similar to Creed’s. It is almost a clone of Aaron Lewis (of Staind) and Fred Durst’s collaboration, “Outside.”

The album is too predictable, annoying and just plain lousy. It’s one of those albums that after a first listen, the buyer takes good care of the disc to make sure he gets top dollar at the used record store for it.

The band should find new way to demonstrate its talented musical assets. Otherwise, look the other way, the band will take the hint and slowly dwindle away - sort of like all the other rap-rock bands out there.
