Award nominee to talk on campus

Denis Halliday, a Nobel Peace Prize nominee, will speak on campus Wednesday.

He will discuss the relationships between Iraq, terrorism and the United States from 7:30-9 p.m. in E100 Veterinary Medical Center.

Halliday has been a critic of U.S. policies that target Iraq.

“Iraq isn’t really the threat the U.S. makes them out to be,” said Joey Marogil, an accounting senior and program coordinator for the lecture. “(Halliday) is going to explain how the public has a lot of misunderstandings and how a lack of diplomatic relationships makes the situations worse.”

Halliday is a veteran United Nations diplomat, former assistant secretary general and director of the Oil-for-Food Programme in Iraq. He also spent a year as the United Nation’s humanitarian coordinator in Iraq before resigning. Halliday has spoken to Congress, international media and global policymakers against the current situation in Iraq.

Halliday is a native of Ireland and has a master‘s degree in economics, geography and public administration from Trinity College in Dublin.
