MEAP protested at Capitol rally

February 5, 2002

Picketers will be taking a stand against standardized testing today in front of the Capitol.

The event, organized by Parents Voice for Children, will run from 1-5 p.m. to refute the effectiveness of the Michigan Education Assessment Program, organizer Sherry Dickerson said.

The MEAP is given in fourth, fifth, seventh and 11th grades and is designed to test proficiencies in the areas of social studies, mathematics, science and English.

“It’s discriminatory against the individuality of the student,” the history graduate student said.

“Standardized testing cannot judge the intelligence of a student. Our main emphasis is that schools need to focus on school as a process rather than data memorization and regurgitation.”
