Conciousness

U should take every opportunity to learn from terrorist attacks, understand our history

As people strive to figure out their place in the post-Sept. 11 world, it’s crucial for them to learn as much as possible about the circumstances that led to such a tragedy.

The events of that morning are among the most significant in our history - it’s imperative we learn about them.

We encourage the MSU community to take advantage of the lecture series “Middle East Contexts for September 11.”

Presented by the Department of History, the series will bring various speakers to MSU biweekly to discuss topics of religion, politics and the terrorist attacks.

Participating in such discussions is crucial in promoting the kind of understanding needed to battle terrorism in all its forms. It appears many students feel the same way.

It took only two days for the new course “9-11: The Causes, Consequences and Implications of the September 11 Events in their International Dimensions,” to be filled to capacity.

Various other courses surrounding Islam and the Middle East have seen increased enrollment since the terrorist attacks.

Students who take those classes should be commended for seeking knowledge to understand a complex topic.

It is our hope more students will pursue similar information and that all will continue to learn about world issues following the aftermath of Sept. 11.

At a university that strives to provide a broad global-view to its students, it is important for them to take advantage of educational opportunities.

It may be one of the most vital points in preventing history from repeating itself.
