Move to limit tuition lacks support

January 9, 2002

Hopes for an amendment to the state constitution that would place limits on tuition rates vanished when the proposal may not receive enough support from the state Legislature.

The measure, introduced by Republican Lt. Gov. Dick Posthumus, would cap university tuition rates at the inflation rate or 5 percent but the chamber will not vote on the amendment, Senate Majority Leader Dan DeGrow, R-Port Huron said this week.

State Sen. John Schwarz, R-Battle Creek, said despite tuition increases at all of the Michigan’s 15 public universities, students are still getting a good deal.

“The cost of an education at a public university in the state of Michigan is a bargain compared to an education at a private school,” said Schwarz, a gubernatorial candidate in this year’s election.

Posthumus’ proposal was initiated after Central Michigan University announced a 28 percent tuition increase last month.
