Complex to open first apartments for residents in January

December 5, 2001

Heather Locklear probably won’t be interfering in the love lives of residents in these Melrose apartments.

The first apartment of Melrose Communities will be available in January.

The apartments, located at 16789 Chandler Road, will be allowing students to move into the partially finished complex on Jan. 3 and Jan. 4, said Ann Siegrist, a Melrose leasing specialist.

The complex is off Abbott Road, past Lake Lansing Road.

Two buildings are finished for residents to begin living in, she said.

The complexes offer individual bathrooms, appliances, card key access, a roommate matching program and a club house.

Siegrist said the club house will be finished in late February and will have tanning beds and a computer lab.

“There is going to be 306 units and 936 individual leases, because we lease by the bedroom,” she said.

The complex will also offer resident activities such as pool parties, basketball tournaments, dinners and luncheons.

But students have to provide some qualifications for living in Melrose Communities.

Siegrist said residents must have either a parent or guardian co-sign the lease or make three times the rent and have three years of prior leasing experience. This may keep some students from gaining entrance to the apartments.

Fred Bauries, an East Lansing landlord who owns three homes leased to students, said parents or guardians may not want to become co-signers for leasing students because of the obligations of completing the lease.

“The other impact is going to be (that the properties) are the farthest away,” he said. “They may have a greater difficulty renting. For some students though, that might be appealing.”

Bauries said despite the distance from campus, apartment complexes still find students willing to take up residence.

He said students who prefer to lease homes usually prefer to having windows on all sides, convenient parking and a green space to call their own.

But students will make the final decision whether to move into apartments or not.

General business freshman, Michael Caramagno, said the distance and cooking are definite drawbacks to living off campus.

Kristy Foley said she is moving into an apartment next year at Sterling University Court, 4915 Belle Chase Blvd. in Lansing.

“The dorms were nice for my first few years, but I think I will like living in an apartment too,” the zoology junior said.
