Students needed to usher for weekend performances

November 15, 2001

The Theatre Department is seeking students to usher at Wharton Center for “Hamlet,” beginning tonight.

Anne Erickson, a theater graduate student and house manager of the Theatre Department, said she works hard to recruit ushers, but would like more students who are not associated with the department to get involved.

The department can always use more ushers for productions, Erickson said.

“Ushering is a really great experience, and you can put it on your résumé,” she said. “There are also a lot of incentives.”

Students who usher are able to watch the production for free, Erickson said.

About 40 Phi Mu members volunteered to usher for the opening of “Hamlet” last weekend.

Gerri Barker, Phi Mu president and criminal justice senior, said her sorority wanted to do something for the greater MSU community. It was a good way to help people as well as getting to see a play for free, she said.

“If the opportunity came up again, we would probably jump at the chance,” Barker said.

She said she would encourage other students to usher, because the Theatre Department could use the help.

“They are just trying to get their name out there like everyone else,” she said.

Hospitality business senior Meredith Flanagan of Phi Mu ushered one evening and said it’s a good way for students to get involved.

“It’s a great way to see something on campus that is cultural, rather than going to a party,” she said. “Plus, it’s a free event that you can see with your friends.”

Student ushers are needed for the second weekend of “Hamlet” at Wharton Center’s Pasant Theatre.

The show will begin at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. Those interested may e-mail Erickson at housemanageranne@hotmail.com.
