Rest for the weary

Exposure to traumatic events warrants

Having to cope with any type of tragedy is not the best feeling in the world, but when there are people dedicated to helping others cope with traumatic experiences, there is a feeling of gratefulness and relief.

Following the recent terrorist attacks, many lives were altered and the need for relief substantially increased. But America stood strong, the country pulled together, and help was on the way for those who were seeking it.

The Dart family has responded generously to the Sept. 11 attacks in New York. They are erecting a center for journalism and trauma called Dart Center Ground Zero to assist journalists with the traumatic effects of covering the horrific attacks.

The major reason that centers similar to this one are put up is to help people cope with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

PTSD is a psychiatric disorder that can occur following the experience or witnessing of life-threatening events. Most people who are exposed to a traumatic and stressful event experience some of the PTSD symptoms in days or weeks following the exposure.

Following the Oklahoma City bombing, there were centers to help people cope with the trauma. At MSU, a Victims and the Media Program was established in 1991 to help journalism students in reporting on victims of violence.

No matter what the circumstance, help should be available for everyone. In instances like the Oklahoma City bombing, the Sept. 11 attacks and other traumatizing experiences, very few can attest to being unaffected. Everyone should be taken care of and have someone to talk to in these circumstances.
