Naess strives for perfection

October 18, 2001
Leona Naess
I Tried to Rock You But You Only Roll

Every cookie cutter, token female solo vocalist falls into one of two categories.

She either gets lumped with the plethora of come-and-go artists that have made blips on the music radar over the last few years: Natalie Imbruglia, Aimee Mann and more recently Shea Seger and Emiliana Torrini.

Or she could, possibly, get compared to those few vocalists who manage to become queens of the music industry: Tori Amos, Sarah McLachlan, Fiona Apple and Bjsrk come to mind.

Group Leona Naess into the latter category.

Stylistically Naess reminds one of a Liz Phair, specifically from the “Whitechocolatespaceegg” era. On the album, Naess tackles everything from love to life to boys that have done her wrong. In many ways, it is the same stereotypical album put out by her fellow up-and-coming songstresses Seger and Torrini. But on the same note, it’s different.

Naess’ vocals are simple, yet impressive, but what separates her from the pack is that musically, the album is amazingly eclectic, reminding one of the aforementioned goddesses of the contemporary charts. Songs like “Mayor of Your Town,” “Hurricane” and “Panic-Stricken” are prime examples of a songwriting prowess which started when she was in her teens. As Diana Ross’ former stepdaughter, she undoubtedly had some coaching from someone with experience.

Naess is on tour with Eagle Eye Cherry and will play at The Magic Stick in Detroit on Monday.
