Juice on the loose

Road rage trial brings Simpson back to court

The Juice is loose - and this time it’s absurd. O.J. Simpson is in court again, as the sole defense witness for himself against charges of auto burglary and battery charges.

In his testimony in a Florida courtroom Tuesday, Simpson asserted, among other things, that he never had to lie with his life depending on it, and that he had never been accused of being an actor - a comment that produced laughter throughout the courtroom.

Facing up to 16 years in prison if convicted, Simpson answered a series of questions in cross-examination, some of which were barred as Prosecutor Abbe Rifkin began treading the line on items relating to his ex-wife, and the criminal trial in which he was accused of killing Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman.

During normal times this news might make more prominent headlines, although it really shouldn’t. O.J. Simpson is a free man, and will probably crop up from time to time, but he certainly doesn’t need the publicity that is so freely given.

If anything, this trial of the moment deserves little more than a short blurb, rather than the CNN and Associated Press coverage it’s been getting.

Road rage happens to everybody, and sometimes it’s tough to control your temper. But in a sad and shameful way, it’s kind of funny to see it happen because it’s Simpson.

He may well get off, few people get arrested for road rage. And almost everybody knows the Juice’s record with the legal system.

If we see Simpson in the news again, it probably won’t be any more newsworthy than this. While his antics aren’t a cry for attention, it doesn’t mean we should give him any. There’s no need to add to the notoriety of an already infamous figure.
