As Halloween approaches, the Lansing Junior Chamber of Commerce is preparing for its annual haunted house.
The chamber, known as the Lansing Jaycees, has been holding the yearly event for 11 years. The Jaycees is a nonprofit organization of 21- to 39-year-olds that does community service.
The haunted house is the organizations biggest fund-raiser. In the past the event has brought in as much as $10,000 to $12,000 with more than 2,000 people attending the site.
This year our goal is raise about $10,000; its all for a good cause, said Bridget Lilly, chairwoman of the board for the Jaycees.
Lilly said the house will be very scary and features include a possessed car modeled after Stephen Kings novel Christine.
We got a lot of ideas from horror movies and stuff like books, she said. We have a special effect with arms sticking out called Hall of Arms.
Proceeds from the event go to support various Lansing Jaycee projects.
This years haunted house will be held on the first floor of the Impression 5 Science Center, located at 200 Museum Drive in Lansing. The museum donated the space to the Jaycees.
Were all for the partnership, said Erik Larson, interpretive programs officer at Impression 5 Science Center.
Though the group doesnt suggest children younger than 6 attend, the haunted house is for all ages.
We yell chicken nuggets to let workers know little kids are coming, so they wont be too scary, said Lilly. And we say things if its a couple or a group of high school kids, so theyll really scare them.
Opening night for the haunted house will be Friday. Doors are open from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Tickets for the event are $5 and can be bought at the door.
