Group kicks out common delicatessen

Electronica and groove-based music with repeated loops is a delicacy. Only so many groups can pull it off without sounding repetitive.

On the latest by wiremnky, the group is noted more for what it doesn’t do, using minimal instrumentation and dreary voices to guide the album along.

The vocals sound like a mix between Björk and Fiona Apple, with the backdrop coming right out off the soundtrack to the major motion picture, “The Matrix.”

“Dirt” has an almost silent electric ivory repetition that gives the song a dancey feeling, but the vocals stump its growth.

The use of keyboards and other electronic goodness is achieved with flying colors, but the voices have the same motif throughout the entire record.

“Gridlock” is a club-influenced song with eerie effects underneath the Belly-influenced vocals while “airport” even delves a little bit into the drum pattern of obscure Smashing Pumpkins tracks, but eventually switches gears into an upbeat and kickin’ tune.

“Water Glass” experiments with some jungle beats, while “no auto focus” is “Jock Jam” beats at its worst. From the ’80s influence of “small unimportant requests” to the typical Depeche Mode realm of “unrequited,” this record is decent, but nothing special.

After the first couple of tracks, the vocals are wonderful and melodic, but by halfway through the record, they are repetitive and irritating. It seems as if every tune follows the same singing trend - a drive-breaker for this steam engine of an album.
