Cross-country squads finish on top at Roy Griak Invitational over weekend

The men and women’s cross country teams had strong showings at Saturday’s 16th annual Roy Griak Invitational. The women finished fifth out of 32 teams in the 6-kilometer race and the men placed ninth out of 36 teams in the 8-kilometer competition.

Senior Ann Somerville led the women with a 13th place finish, going 21:16. Sophomore teammates Michelle Carson followed at 15th and Jamie Kryzminski grabbed 33rd. Other Spartans finishing in the top 100 were freshman Katie Anderson (64th), junior Cindy Durocher (69th) and sophomore Sarah Pepera (98th).

Freshman Chris Toloff paced the men’s squad at 23rd running 24:46.2.

Other notables Spartan finishes were junior Andrew Alley (36th), sophomore Jason Mueller (59th), junior Ben Davis (71st) and freshman Mike Thorson (89th).

Both teams’ next race is the pre-NCAA meet Oct. 13 in Greenville, S.C.
