Baseball team tops Blue Jays select team, 14-5; McCuiston knocks a grand slam

The MSU baseball team defeated the Toronto Blue Jays Amateur Select Baseball Club 14-5 in an exhibition game Sunday at Kobs Field.

A six-run sixth inning and a five-run seventh inning propelled the Spartans to their victory.

Senior outfielder Chris McCuiston led MSU, going 3-for-5 with six RBIs including a seventh-inning grand slam.

Nine pitchers contributed to the Spartans’ win combining for 11 strikeouts, scattering eight hits throughout the game. Senior right-hander Nick Bates struck out all three batters he faced in his one-inning stint. Senior right-hander Mike

Sailing was credited as the winning pitcher for the Spartans.

The Spartans are returning 10 seniors this season and will also expect a lot from sophomore outfielder All-American Bob Malek and freshman pitcher Bryan Gale.

The regular season begins Feb. 22, 2002, in Las Vegas when the Spartans battle California-Santa Barbara.
