University to join nationwide vigil

Classes scheduled for 11:30 a.m. and 12:40 p.m. have been canceled to allow students to participate, MSUPresident M. Peter McPherson said Thursday.

There will also be a carillon concert at Beaumont Tower from 12:15-12:45 p.m. and an Interfaith Service of Remembrance at the Wharton Center’s Great Hall at 1 p.m.

Also, a mass e-mail has been circulating throughout campus urging students to participate in a 7 p.m. candle-lighting - no matter what you’re doing or where you are.

“The president declared this a national day of mourning, this event at Wharton Center is very appropriate,” McPherson said. “We’re pleased we were able to put this together as we have.”

Campus floods area blood drive

About 600 MSU students waited more than two hours at the Union to donate blood Wednesday, but because of staff limitations, only 127 people were able to donate, the American Red Cross said.

“We appreciate the donations as do the people in New York, and we need them to continue to help us in November,” said Carol Lovelady, donor recruitment representative for MSU.

Lovelady said blood levels are high for the next week but more supplies will be needed during the annual MSU/Penn State Blood Donor Challenge in November.

She said blood will also be needed for months to support burn victims of Tuesday’s attacks. All blood collected this week will be used or must be discarded in the next 60 days, so resources must constantly be revitalized, Lovelady said.

Case mentors collecting cans

All 22 Case Hall mentors will be visiting every residence hall Sunday night collecting cans and bottles to raise money for the American Red Cross, which will use the funds for relief efforts in New York and Washington.

Mentors are asking students to save their cans and bag or box them. They will be visiting dorms from 8:30-10 p.m. Sunday.
