Senator aims to inspire young

U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow’s niece and daughter were at her side during her campaign.

Since then, she continues to make a statement to young women, said Dave Lemmon, Stabenow’s communication director.

“Debbie has talked about how she sees herself as a role model for young women,” he said.

And young women today continue to impress her, Lemmon said.

“She’s made the point that when she was in high school she’d wear her boyfriend’s letterman jacket and her daughter earned her own,” he said.

Stabenow, D-Lansing, will visit Schuler Books, 2075 W. Grand River Ave. in Okemos, at 7:30 p.m. today to share her experiences as a female senator and promote the new paperback edition of “Nine and Counting: The Women of the Senate.”

“The main reason for putting together this book was to inspire girls to go into politics and succeed,” said Mary Ellen Wood, Schuler Books general manager.

Proceeds from book sales will benefit the Girl Scouts of America.
