Ohio wide receiver still considering U

July 9, 2001

Football recruit Andre Chattams has narrowed his choice to three colleges and MSU is near the top of the list.

The 5-foot-11 wide receiver from Dayton Chaminade-Julienne High in Dayton, Ohio, told The State News that Purdue, Georgia Tech and MSU are his top three choices.

But Chattams is in no rush to make a decision - he said he doesn’t intend to make one in the near future.

Still, Chattams is reportedly one of the receivers MSU head coach Bobby Williams and his staff are most actively pursuing.

“MSU is still near the top of my list,” Chattams said Sunday. “I think my speed is the strength that people look at when they are looking to sign me.”

Chattams, who will be a senior at Chaminade this fall, attended the Ohio State football camp last week and was clocked at 4.38 seconds in the 40-yard dash. His older brother, Angelo Chattams, has already signed with the Buckeyes and will play for them this season.

Although Ohio State isn’t at the top of his list, Chattams isn’t ruling out a reunion with his brother in Columbus.

Andre Chattams’ playing style is completely different than his older brother’s, he said.

“We are different - a lot different,” Chattams said.

“He catches the ball short and makes moves and dekes defenders. I’m the deep threat because I can get down the field fast.”

As a junior last season, Chattams caught 29 passes and racked up 578 yards with nine touchdowns, averaging more than 20 yards per catch.

Chattams’ former high school teammate, defensive tackle Brandon McKinney, has already signed with MSU and might be able to lure his hometown buddy to East Lansing. McKinney will join the Spartans this fall.

Bill Kurelic, Midwest football recruiting expert, said Chattams is one of the top receivers in Ohio and has numerous strengths.

“He has good speed, a little faster than his brother, and he has good size,” Kurelic said.

Chattams was also picked as a high school preseason All-American by CL Ronning, another football recruiting expert.

As of Sunday, Kurelic said Purdue was the only school that has offered Chattams a scholarship. He also said when he talked to him, Chattams was leaning toward Purdue.
