MSU womens crew members were honored as athletes and students last week.
Junior Krista Buzzell was named as a First-Team All-Big Ten member and sophomore Rachel Miller was selected as a Second-Team All-Big Ten honoree.
Stacey Hicks, a first-year rower for MSU, was named this years Big Ten Conference Freshman of the Year. Hicks made her varsity debut at the Big Ten Championship on April 28.
Buzzell and senior Nicole DeMott each earned Academic All-Big Ten honors for the second time. Also nominated for Academic All-Big Ten honors were Miller, sophomore Amy Silder, senior Angela Lound, senior Nicole Pefley and junior Cassandra Weddel, all of whom are members of the first varsity eight.
The Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association selected three MSU womens crew members for All-Central Region honors and four were named National Rowing Scholar-Athletes of the Year.
Buzzell and Miller were two of the 14 athletes named to the First Team All-Central Region. Sophomore Kate Gay was the only MSU crew member named as a member of the second team.
The nominations came after Miller and Buzzell appeared in their second- and third-straight NCAA Championships, respectively.
Silder and DeMott joined Buzzell and Miller in being honored as National Rowing Scholar-Athletes of the Year, and were among the 15 Big Ten athletes honored.
Womens track
The MSU womens track and field teams sole competitor was unable to complete her race Thursday at the 2001 Outdoor Track and Field NCAA Championships.
Freshman Michelle Carson - the only freshman in her event - injured her ankle during the 10,000-meter race held at the University of Oregon in Eugene, Ore. She was one of two athletes who failed to finish.
Carson had qualified for the NCAA Championships at the Stanford Invitational on March 31, with a 10,000-meter time of 34:29.13. The time ranked her 19th in a field of 21 at the NCAA Championships, and was good enough to place her fourth on MSUs all-time performance list.
