Forty-eight MSU athletes were honored Tuesday as the Big Ten announced its spring Academic All-Big Ten team.
The honor was given to any athletes with a 3.0 or higher career grade-point average while being a letter-winner in at least their second academic year at their university.
The hockey team topped MSU’s list, with eight players receiving honors, while the women’s track and crew teams recorded seven honorees apiece.
Baseball, men’s track and softball each had five honorees.
With this spring’s honorees, 45 athletes receiving the honor in the fall and 35 in the winter, MSU has now posted a total of 128 honorees for the 2000-01 school year.
Athletes such as hockey players, who fulfill the necessary academic requirements but do not participate in a Big Ten sport, are listed on the “at-large” team.
MSU hockey head coach Ron Mason attributes the team’s academic success to the length of its season, which extended from Sept. 30 to April 5 last season.
“Sometimes we get criticized for having such a long season,” Mason said Wednesday. “Yet I feel when you have a long season, players learn to budget time properly, through making time in their schedule.”

The Ultimate Wrestling Federation announced its “Judgment Day” event, scheduled for June 9 at Breslin Student Events Center, has been canceled. The cancellation is due to low ticket sales.
“We’re just at a loss for words,” said Bill Sexton, who promoted the show. “I don’t understand what happened. We had press releases everywhere, we had buy one, get one free. I just don’t get it.”
Sexton said he had “top notch” wrestlers, such as King Kong Bundy, the Bushwhackers, Jim “The Anvil” Neidhart and Tito Santana, lined up for the event. One of the features of the evening was going to be a steel cage match, which Sexton had been working on since he put the show together in January.
Breslin box office attendants said they have been calling and leaving messages for people who bought tickets for the event to notify them of the cancellation.
Tickets can be refunded by bringing them back to the site of purchase.
