Stepshow raises money for charity

April 4, 2001
Kappa Delta, Delta Sigma Phi and Phi Delta Theta perform a choreographed dance using pop cans as props on Tuesday in the Auditorium. The event is an annual part pf Greek Week 2001 that raises money and canned goods for charity.

Eleven acts, dressed in costumes using props ranging from wood canes to soda cans, rallied those attending the Greek Week annual tradition of Stepshow on Tuesday with rock-stomping beats.

The event held, at the Auditorium, was part of a series of events held by greek chapters during the spring tradition known as Greek Week, which runs through Saturday.

Greek Week co-chairwoman Jackie Kim described Stepshow as an “amazing stomping, clapping, body moving choreographed show.”

“It is one of the more adrenaline running and exciting performances that we put on during Greek Week,” the nutrition science senior said. “The amount of skill that gets put into these performances is amazing.”

Tara Sands of Alpha Chi Omega said her sorority and partner fraternity, Sigma Alpha Mu, had put four-weeks worth of hard practice into their dance, which consisted of a fast-tempoed dance involving stomping of feet, clapping and yelling out phrases in red sports suits and silver-painted faces.

“I have been nervous since this morning,” the business sophomore said. “The hardest thing about this has been the little things. We’re all perfectionists.”

Sigma Alpha Mu member Dave Zamora said the practices have been rigorous and stressful, but was confident all of the hard work will pay off.

“Sacrifice is the key word,” Zamora, a supply chain management sophomore said.

Proceeds from the $3 admission price will be donated to the local charity, Gateway Community Service, a nonprofit organization, which has served Michigan since 1970 by assisting families with its 11 programs, including counseling or medical services.

Gateway spokeswoman Linda Sjolund said the organization depends on MSU students and events like Greek Week.

“We use 50 to 70 MSU volunteers every year,” Sjolund said. “We don’t have the funding to do some things, such as mentoring, and students really do a good job with that program.”

Sjolund expects the donations from Greek Week will help put much needed funding into the program.

“The students at MSU are wonderful, many times you hear negative things about students,” Sjolund said. “The real story is that students come together and they care about the community, by doing services like this.”

Sigma Delta Tau member Amy Zimmerman feels the greek system has been a big part of various service’s to the community.

“That’s one of the things greeks strive for, and Stepshow is just another way for us to give back to the community,” the family community service junior said.
