Spartan baseball drops three games, softball splits matchups

MSU baseball’s six-game winning streak came to a disappointing end this weekend with three losses and a single win over the Ohio University Bobcats.

The Spartans split a doubleheader Sunday, losing 14-9, but came back with a 10-4 win.

The Spartans scored first during the second inning of Friday’s game, but was quickly overpowered by the Bobcats, who held the lead, finishing with a 7-3 win.

The Bobcats dominated Saturday’s game with nine home runs, winning with a score of 21-2. Sophomore outfielder Brett Wattles performed well, going 4-for-5 and leading the game off with a home run during the first inning.

The Spartans will face Illinois for three games next weekend in Champaign, Ill.

Softball

The MSU softball team traveled to San Diego for the University of San Diego Tournament, going 2-2 in its four games against San Diego and San Diego State.

Friday’s first game resulted in a 10-4 loss to San Diego State, followed by a 3-1 win against San Diego.

Saturday’s doubleheader was also split. The Spartans shut out San Diego 3-0 in game one, but lost to San Diego State 6-0.

Junior pitchers Becky Gray and Keri DeJong were responsible for pitching Saturday’s shutout, with Gray going 3 1/3 innings and DeJong going 3 2/3 innings.

The Spartans’ Friday win against San Diego was freshman pitcher Jessica Beech’s third complete game of the season. She threw a one-hitter on four strikeouts, improving her season record to 2-4.

The Aztecs prevailed during both games against the Spartans, taking an early lead and holding it Friday, and shutting out MSU on Saturday.

The team will play five games this weekend in Boca Raton, Fla., for the Florida Atlantic Invitational.

Women’s gymnastics

The women’s gymnastics team edged out Missouri during its last home meet of the season Saturday.

The Spartans came out on top 195-194.125 after earning their highest score of the season on the floor with a score of 49.2.

Seniors Elisabeth Forshier and Lori Ruane gave impressive performances with wins on the vault and the floor competition, respectively.

Sophomore Christy Linder took the all-around competition with a win on the balance beam, a tie for second on the bars, and fourth place on the vault.

Because it was the Spartans’ last home meet of the season, Forshier and Ruane, along with seniors Melissa Green and Toni Duce, were recognized for their performance and commitment to the team.

Junior Jane McIntosh also was honored for her performance against UCLA on March 11, where she took first-place wins on the balance beam and on the floor. She was named Big Ten Gymnast of the Week on Thursday.

The next meet for the Spartans is the Big Ten Championship at Michigan, which will begin at 6 p.m. Saturday.

Men’s Gymnastics

The Spartan men’s gymnastics team also had a very close-scoring meet Friday, falling to Michigan 215.525-215 in Ann Arbor.

Freshman Taft Dorman led the team by taking the rings and vault.

The Spartans had several other wins by junior Jonathan Plante on the pommel horse, sophomore Jamie Shepard on the parallel bars and sophomore Brad Golden on the floor.

The only event in which the Spartans didn’t take first was the horizontal bar.

Penn State will challenge MSU in State College, Pa., at 2 p.m. Sunday.

Men’s tennis

The Ball State Cardinals shut out the MSU men’s tennis team 7-0 on Saturday in Muncie, Ind.

The only win for the Spartans came when sophomore Jason Chen and sophomore Rodrigo Abucham defeated the Cardinals at No. 3 doubles.

The Spartans’ next challenge is against Louisville at Louisville, Ky., at noon today.
