Amateur golfers ecstatic for Lansings third golf show

March 16, 2001

While green beer will be on the minds of many MSU students this weekend, Nathan Clark is thinking about a different kind of green.

Clark, a member of the MSU men’s golf team, said he’s interested in seeing what the Lansing Golf Show has to offer.

In its third trip to mid-Michigan, the golf show features everything from putters to apparel.

“I was thinking about stopping by to see what they have,” the general management senior said. “I’m more curious to see the clubs, and stuff like that.”

Taylor Made, Callaway and Titleist are just some of the companies that will be offering testing and trial of golf equipment.

But the show is not just for the experienced golfer.

“It’s a great way to get introduced to golf,” said Robin Smith, an event coordinator.

The show, held at the Lansing Center, 333 E. Michigan Ave., will give both beginning golfers and experienced golfers the opportunity to fine-tune their skills, she said.

“We’ll have an indoor putting green and hitting nets, where people can go in and practice their swing,” she said.

She said the three-day event, which typically has 12,000 to 15,000 people attend, also houses retailers and resort officials who offer prices typically below the retail price.

“People walk away with some really good deals,” she said.

Smith said the event is something people of any age enjoy.

“Little kids love the putting green,” she said. “Last year, there was this little guy - he couldn’t have been more than five years old - back by the hitting nets, who was just wailing on the ball.”

Smith said Saturday and Sunday, show-goers will have the opportunity to putt against members of Fox-47 News. The money raised from the putting challenge will benefit the Veterans of Foreign Wars Children’s Home.

Laurie McCann, an event director, said the 95,000-square foot layout will offer golf fans an interactive experience with their favorite sport.

“There will be a virtual golf simulator, free pro instruction and various contests,” she said.

John Dal Corobbo, director of golf instruction at Forest Akers Golf courses at MSU, is one of the professional golfers who will be available to help golfers with their game during the show.

This is his second year participating in the event and he said he’s eager for the weekend to begin.

“I think the show is a great benefit for the Lansing community,” he said. “It’s a nice kick-off to get everyone excited about the season.”

He said the show provides great exposure for all the participating facilities, and allows golfers to brush up on their game and plan their golfing trips all at the same time.

“You’ll be able to find discounts for rounds of golf, shoes, bags - everything you need to get your year started off correctly,” he said.

Admission to the Lansing Golf Show is $6. On Friday only there will be a two-for-one admission deal. Discount coupons are also available at www.michigangolfshow.com.

The show is open from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.
