Police briefs 02/19/01

In an apparent copycat crime, an unknown person broke into a Campbell Hall conference room and attempted to steal a decorative plastic tree.The would-be thief apparently gained access to the room between noon and 3:40 p.m. Saturday by damaging a room divider separating the conference room from a lounge, MSU police Lt. Kelly Beck said. The room door was left ajar and a tree was found in the hallway nearby.Police found a clipping of Friday’s police briefs from The State News in the conference room, Beck said. One of the items in the article detailed the theft of three decorative trees from the conference room between Feb. 1 and Tuesday.The clipping has been sent to the Michigan State Police Crime Lab for fingerprint analysis. An investigation is ongoing. Each of the trees is valued at $150. Police have no suspects.

  • A 22-year-old male student reported an unknown man assaulted him while playing basketball Thursday at IM Sports-West.The student said he fouled the unknown man while playing. The foul escalated into pushing and the man punched the student in the face at least twice, Beck said. The student received two black eyes and a bruised nose, but did not want to press charges.
  • A television in the Holden Hall exercise room was found broken on the floor after someone apparently removed it from its wall bracket.The incident occurred between noon Wednesday and 9:30 a.m. Friday, Beck said. Damage is estimated at $650 and police have no suspects.
  • MSU police were called to Armstrong Hall at 1:30 p.m. Friday after staff noticed the odor of marijuana.Officers did not notice the odor upon arrival but a police dog detected the scent from a dorm room, Beck said.A 19-year-old male student allowed police to enter the room Friday and said he smoked marijuana the previous day. Upon searching the room, police found a plastic bag of what is suspected to be marijuana, Beck said.The case has been forwarded to the Ingham County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
