In an apparent copycat crime, an unknown person broke into a Campbell Hall conference room and attempted to steal a decorative plastic tree. The would-be thief apparently gained access to the room between noon and 3:40 p.m. Saturday by damaging a room divider separating the conference room from a lounge, MSU police Lt. Kelly Beck said. The room door was left ajar and a tree was found in the hallway nearby.Police found a clipping of Fridays police briefs from The State News in the conference room, Beck said. One of the items in the article detailed the theft of three decorative trees from the conference room between Feb. 1 and Tuesday. The clipping has been sent to the Michigan State Police Crime Lab for fingerprint analysis. An investigation is ongoing. Each of the trees is valued at $150. Police have no suspects.
