Police briefs 02/01/01

A car caught fire at 2:30 a.m. Wednesday while parked near East Holden Hall.East Lansing firefighters extinguished the engine fire in the 1990 Mercury Topaz, but the car was a complete loss, MSU police Detective Tony Willis said. An electrical problem is believed to have caused the fire. The car is valued at $3,000.

  • A 19-year-old student reported his Cannondale mountain bike stolen from a bike rack near Brody Hall.The bike had been locked to the rack with a $10 cable lock, Willis said. The lock had been cut and the bike was taken between 5:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. Tuesday.The bike is valued at $400. Police have no suspects.
  • A 22-year-old student reported his stereo and a case of CDs stolen from his car parked in Ramp 2 near the Computer Center.The items were taken between 9 p.m. Monday and 12:10 a.m. Tuesday, Willis said.The stereo and stolen CDs are valued at $375. Police have no suspects.
  • A 23-year-old student reported his laptop computer, Palm Pilot and book bag stolen from his car parked in Ramp 5 near the Communication Arts and Sciences Building.The items were stolen between 9:30 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. Tuesday, Willis said.The stolen items are valued at about $4,000. Police have no suspects.
  • A 20-year-old student reported the stereo stolen from his car parked in Lot 75 at Kalamazoo Street and Harrison Avenue.The stereo was taken between 11 p.m. Sunday and 2 a.m. Tuesday, Willis said. The car was locked, but the a door had been damaged to gain entry.The stereo is valued at $250. Damage is estimated at $200. Police have no suspects.
