Club walks about in mall

Shoppers and nonshoppers are lacing up their sneakers for the “Walkabout Club” at Meridian Mall, which kicks off at 9:30 a.m. today in the mall’s food court.

The program is co-sponsored by Sparrow Health System, the Arthritis Foundation and MSU Alumni Association’s Evening College. The Walkabout Club is the first of its kind at Meridian Mall, 1982 W. Grand River Ave. in Okemos.

The club is a community collaboration presented by the mall to help walkers make more of their experiences. The walking program is free and open to the public.

“We are excited because the mall has never had an official walking club,” said Claudia Frederick, a spokeswoman for Meridian Mall. “The malls throughout Detroit have had walkabouts and they have been successful.

“We will open our doors early so they can enjoy the walking in a controlled climate, versus walking outdoors, and promote good health.”

Frederick said the club will offer incentives to walk, speakers on health issues, and will create a stronger social environment for walkers.

Organizers have planned a celebration today that will feature a continental breakfast and speakers. Fitness tips to better walking will also be available.

“We are going to have speakers,” said Louise Cooley, director of the Evening College. “The MSU Alumni Association will have a table with materials about membership. Sparrow Hospital will have a will have a table, they will be promoting their educational behaviors. The Arthritis Foundation will have a table with materials.”
