Mens hoops make ESPY

Despite playing for the Detroit Pistons, Mateen Cleaves has a chance to add to his college résumé.

Cleaves and the 2000 NCAA championship Spartans were nominated thursday for the 2001 ESPY Awards.

The 1999-2000 MSU men’s basketball team was nominated for College Team of the Year. The Spartans will be challenged for the award by Connecticut’s 2000 NCAA champion women’s basketball team, Louisiana State’s 2000 NCAA champion baseball team and Oklahoma’s 2000 national championship football team.

Cleaves was individually nominated for the Men’s College Basketball Player of the Year award. Also nominated were Iowa State’s Marcus Fizer, Cincinnati’s Kenyon Martin and Notre Dame’s Troy Murphy.

Cleaves graduated as the all-time leader in career assists for MSU and the Big Ten.

The ESPY Awards will be televised at 9 p.m. Feb. 12 on ESPN.
