Center offers month of excitement to U

January 8, 2001

The Wharton Center will be showcasing talent ranging from a Broadway touring company to the celebrated cellist Yo-Yo Ma this month.

The Broadway musical Cabaret, which received four Tony Awards in 1998, will be performing Tuesday through Jan. 14. Set during the early years of the Third Reich in Germany, Cabaret is based on the real-life experiences of Christopher Isherwood, author of “The Berlin Stories.”

On Jan. 18, two-time Grammy nominee the Mingus Big Band will perform at Wharton with its concert, “Blues and Politics.”

The 14-piece band has toured in Europe and the United States, beginning in 1991. Devoted to the work of Charles Mingus, who died in 1979, the band is under the direction of his wife, Sue Mingus.

In 1993, Mingus became the first black man to achieve the honor of having his music in the Library of Congress, and in 1997 he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences.

On Jan. 19-21, Robert Dubac’s “The Male Intellect: An Oxymoron?” will ask the audience to follow Dubac in his search for the answer to the question, “What do women want?”

Dubac will play six characters in addition to keeping a schizophrenic conversation with his feminine side.

The Moscow Festival Ballet will be performing “Swan Lake” on Jan. 24. Artistic Director Sergei Radchenko founded the festival in 1989. The ballet is set to the music of Tchaikovsky, and the full four acts of “Swan Lake” will be performed.

He will play music that sheds light on some of the cultures of Eastern Asia and Europe.

Tickets can be ordered by calling 800-Wharton, or visiting its Website at www.msu.edu/unit/wharton
