Feminist artist to speak to U

Feminist art, one of the premiere movements of the 1970s, is still making its presence known at MSU in the new millennium.

Miriam Schapiro, a leading figure in the feminist art movement, is visiting MSU this week. This is Schapiro’s second time visiting MSU since the mid-1980s. She is an accomplished artist known for her pottery, textiles, costume and craft work.

“She’s a superb artist,” women’s studies Professor Marilyn Frye said. “She’s part of the leading figures in the development of feminist art.”

Schapiro will deliver a public lecture, “A Personal Journey,” to discuss her career as a breakthrough artist, her exhibit and her life. The lecture is 7:30 p.m. today in N-100 Business College Complex.

Schapiro’s “Works on Paper, A Thirty Year Retrospective,” has been on display at Kresge Art Museum. Her exhibit opened Sept. 5 and runs through Nov. 5. It is a collection of painting, sculpting and printmaking.

“There has been good attendance to her exhibit,” museum curator April Kingsley said.

The feminist art movement has long been a part of Schapiro’s work. Schapiro’s work explores women’s issues, identity and accomplishments and transforms them into art.

“She kind of started painting disguised as feminism in the form of art,” Kingsley said.

Because she incorporates images not usually associated with fine art, her work has been considered too decorative by some critics.

But with the combination of her classical art training and interest in feminism, she’s created her own style of feminist art.

“She’s a breakthrough artist. She integrated material from examples of women’s lives into fine art,” Frye said.

MSU’s Department of Jewish Studies is hosting a small conversation with Schapiro at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in the Kresge Art Center’s gallery.

The Department of Women’s Studies is also having a group conversation with Schapiro at 4 p.m. Thursday in Kresge.
